Ukamaka Magazine is a space devoted to remembering women through poetry, fiction, essays, and reviews, centering the voices history forgets and celebrating everyday lives, archives, and imaginations across Africa and the global diaspora.
Each issue invites you to pause, listen deeply, and carry forward the untold stories of women before us.

"We wanted to build a home for the stories that are spoken in whispers, shared over warm tea, or kept alive in the quiet spaces of our homes."
Ukamaka Magazine was born from a singular, intimate necessity: to witness the profound complexities of African womanhood without the filter of external expectation. It is a digital sanctuary where intellectual depth meets soulful storytelling.
Named in honor of my mother, Joy Ngozi Ukamaka Nnebe, this publication serves as an archival bridge between generations. Her name, Ukamaka, translates to "the word is good" or "a good conversation"—a philosophy that anchors every piece we curate.
Our mission is simple yet radical: to celebrate the Nigerian woman and her sisters across the continent and diaspora. We are not interested in the loudest voices; we are interested in the truest ones. We are here to document the art, the grief, the triumph, and the mundane brilliance that defines our existence.
